I Have a Problem …

It usually starts like this: “Oh, my gosh! I have the GREATEST idea EVER!!” It usually ends with a trip to stores to pick up supplies, and then nothing. Yeah, I either never start that fantastic project, or I do and then it doesn’t go as planned.

This one started with an idea for one of my wedding showers. I didn’t want a guest book, because let’s face it. What do you do with the book after the big day? It just sits in storage. I had a brilliant idea for everyone to sign a quilt block instead. I used black and white because those were my wedding colors. Five years later it’s finally finished. Well, at least it’s pieced. Now I have to find someone to quilt it.

2014-02-25 11.52.38

The quilt pattern is called “in and out.” The finished blocks measure 7-inches square. There are a total of 143 blocks. There are 13 rows of 11 blocks each.

There’s just something comforting about a homemade quilt. It make me feel loved when I’m sick or lonely … cherished after a bad day, and safe when I’m scared. I think it’s because my grandmother loved to quilt and they always make me think of her.

I Bleed Crimson and Blue, BUT …

Image   Anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE Royals baseball, Chiefs football, KU football (yes, I realize I’m just torturing myself) and KU basketball.

I love watching the Jayhawks tipoff inside Allen Fieldhouse … love the “Beware of the Phog” sign in the rafters (it should be larger) … and my favorite KU mascot is Baby Jay.  (How can you not love it strutting around with its little 1/2 jersey??)

While my heart will always belong to the Jayhawks, I am THRILLED that the Wichita State Shockers are the only remaining undefeated NCAA basketball team in the country this season.  I love that there’s another Kansas team experiencing success.  I grew up near Wichita.  My mom earned her Master’s Degree from WSU.  But the big rivalry was always KU vs. K-State.  (No mention of Mizzou in my hometown.)  WSU barely got a mention.

I get it.  Wichita State is in a different conference.  The University dropped its football program way back in the day.  Its basketball team couldn’t compete.  Well, until recently.  It’s giving sports fans in Wichita — and across the state — another reason to cheer.  I hope it will help create even more basketball fans.  Because the sport is fantastic.  (Well, until you hit the NBA, at least in my opinion, but that’s for another time.)

So yeah, I’ll still be waving the wheat for the Jayhawks.  But a tiny bit will also be waving for the Shockers.

My $100ish Grocery Haul

Can you even believe the price of groceries?! There’s a study out that found chicken, beef and bacon prices have jumped around 20-percent since 2011. Yikes!! Don’t even get met started about fresh fruits and veggies!

After this week’s haul I can’t believe we have any grocery money left for next week’s shopping trip. Before you take a look at the list, it’s going to take some work. Again, I look at this like it’s my second job and all the stores are close to my house. That mean’s I’m not running all over town. So here’s a look at what I picked up/will pick up this week …

My Love Affair with Zombies and the Color Orange

OK.  So this sounds like something from Halloween.  Funny how things often aren’t what they seem.

I LOVE The Walking Dead.  I love that it’s not really about the walkers.  (They could really be a number of antagonists.)  They could just as easily be war, hunger, a plague, etc.  But it wasn’t love at first sight!

I blew off the show for the first two seasons.  Everyone at work was talking about the show and LOVING it.  I just pulled the Titanic card.  (A.K.A. — it can’t be as good as everyone says it is. — and by the way, I’ve never seen Titanic.)  Then my husband decided we were going to watch it and got the discs from Netflix.

Oh, yes.  We watched the first 3 seasons in about 2 weeks.  After watching hours upon hours of the show one weekend I may have even started to think that Walkers COULD be real. (j/k … kind of)  Anywho … I’m glad the survivors are finally out of the prison.  I’m also looking forward to seeing what the writers and directors do with the show this season.

My new obsession is Orange is the New Black.  We just streamed the first season and watched all of it in 2 days.  (Yeah, we’re getting a little too comfy on the couch.)  I’m late to this party too … but not as tardy as I was when I jumped on The Walking Dead wagon.

Now I’m left counting down to the release of season 2.  At least I still have the zombies …

The Secret I’m Keeping from My Husband …

It’s time to clear the air, I guess.

I’m keeping a secret from my husband.  And it’s a pretty big one.  It has a lot to do with these pictures:

Image

OK … it has EVERYTHING to do with that picture.  I want to welcome this FABLOUS hexagon wall into our home with open arms.  The problem?  He.  Will.  Have.  A.  Heart Attack!  Mandi over at vintagerevivals.com may have blown my mind a little with this one.  She designed it for her daughter (how lucky is she???)  I want it to call me into my craft room and help me get back into my creative groove.  Ya know, like “Heidi Got Her Groove Back.”

Here’s the prob.  Right now THIS is what I have …

Image

Yup .. in all of it’s glory.  Stacks of unfinished projects … mismatched curtains … no furniture.  Blech!!  I feel the life being sucked out of me every time I walk into the room.  Something’s gotta change in this one … and soon!

Cost Cutters: Free Milk WYB Cereal!!

One of the questions I am asked the most is how to get healthy stuff and still save money.  This week is a GREAT example!!  Keep in mind that It’s not convenient and takes time.  But I look at it like it’s my second job.  (I save way more than I’d make actually working a second job.  I know because I’ve done it.  Plus my husband and I SOMEHOW bought a house where every single store I need is on my way home from work … so I don’t spend any extra cash on gas.  (Unless you count pulling in and out of a parking lot.)
